Salisbury elections traditionally go into full gear on Labor Day. All the work this spring and  summer have been in preparation for the upcoming 8 weeks.

I attended City Council meeting on Tuesday. Council approved a local occupancy tax and a local tourism board, to work in cooperation with the County board. I was pleased to see that our outdoor sculpture show got coverage on public TV as well as in Our State magazine. More visitors to Salisbury = more dollar$ spent here, keeping businesses open and folks employed.

Our Fulton Heights Neighborhood Association board met that night and made plans for our annual Halloween parade. I am pleased that the board approved officially inviting children from our neighboring historic districts. The neighborhood is also planning a holiday tour for December 5 and a fundraiser calendar for the first of 2010. While these agenda items are not critical, it's nice to have a break from the emergency-type board meetings we had not-so-long ago, keeping commercialism at bay and working on speeding traffic.

Speaking of speeding traffic, I was pleased to observe our local cops issue citations to drivers who ran stop signs in the neighborhood this week. We had sent our police an email and asked them to check on stop-sign-runners and they gladly helped us out.

I attended the SNAG meeting on Wednesday, where they reported the results of a summer-long Drug and Gang operation. During this operation, police made 139 arrests, issued 308 citations, and effected 5 search warrants. They seized 1.6 pounds of marijuana, 3.2 oz cocaine, 12 weapons, and 45 items of drug paraphernalia. They also confiscated $4,810 in drug money. This meeting is so informative; representatives from neighborhoods all over town ask questions and report concerns. Attending these meetings has been an education for me!

On Thursday, Anne Waters, owner of the Green Goat Gallery, hosted a women-only party for me from 4-6 pm. We served champagne and chocolate -- of course. I was so pleased to greet longtime friends as well as new friends I had not yet met. It was a thrill to address them, share my vision for Salisbury, and take their questions. Everything Anne does, she does well, and this gathering was no exception. Thank you, Anne, for hosting this delightful event.

Finally, on Friday, I attended Kids' Night Out downtown. This event was highlighted  by the kickoff for our United Way campaign. Folks were out in full force. Wasn't the soap box derby fun! We couldn't give out our Maggie Blackwell for City Council stickers fast enough, and it was such fun to meet new people and discuss Salisbury.

Bumper stickers are in! Please shoot me an email and we'll get one to you:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

"For too long poor people have had no recourse when problems occur in their rental properties.  You have been instrumental in getting this situation reviewed and then putting in place ways to deal with these problems.  Thank you so much!" Jean Wurster (Educator)
