It's been another exciting week in the campaign.

Last Tuesday, our neighborhood observed National Night Out. A host of police officers and firemen gathered with our neighbors at Centennial Park. The kids climbed on the fire truck, had a coloring contest, and enjoyed freeze-pops as they climbed at the playground. It was a simple night and yet it afforded us the opportunity to come together. It was also a great opportunity for us to thank our public workers for putting their lives in danger for our well-being.

On Wednesday, I attended the monthly SNAG meeting to learn more about crime and how it affects each neighborhood. I learned so much by hearing the thoughts and concerns of the neighborhood leaders as well as the police officers.

On Thursday, all candidates were invited to City Hall to learn more about the city's infrastructure. Each of the department managers spoke to us and provided handouts.

Also on Thursday, I was honored to interview Dr. Catrelia Hunter. A resident of the western part of the county, she has given much to this city in her service to Livingstone College, the United Way, Downtown Salisbury Inc., Salisbury Symphony Board, the American Red Cross, Salisbury-Rowan Human Relations Council, Rowan Helping Ministries, and the Community Care Clinic. What a smart, energetic, and warm person. She is truly building a legacy here in Salisbury.

The Friday Night Out on the 7th was a great way to see scads of citizens and hear their thoughts on our city. I met new friends from the Park Avenue district, NOMA, and Forest Hills. Thanks to each of you for sharing your issues.

On Sunday, my family prepared and served dinner at Rowan Helping Ministries. It's true what they say: When you give, you get back more in return. Many thanks to our dear friends who came and helped cook, serve, and clean up afterwards.

On Tuesday of this week, I met with leaders of the East Side to hear their neighborhood concerns. They are investigating the possibility of organizing a candidate forum at the Civic Center, and inviting all candidates to share their visions for the City.

"For too long poor people have had no recourse when problems occur in their rental properties.  You have been instrumental in getting this situation reviewed and then putting in place ways to deal with these problems.  Thank you so much!" Jean Wurster (Educator)
